WHAT IS THE DON’T BUY IT PROJECT?
The Don’t Buy It Project (DBIP) is a program of Men As Peacemakers (MAP) aimed at engaging men in the prevention of sex trafficking and other forms of sexual exploitation.
The current public conversation is often dominated by broad-sweeping, competing narratives or surface level debates about choice, consent, legalization, and decriminalization. While these debates are still (mostly) relevant, they often lack nuance and are unproductive, and they fail to acknowledge the community-level conditions that create entry ramps into exploitation, or which block exit ramps into safety and healing. The loudest voices also tend to exclude the perspectives of those who experience the most harm and ignore the reality that most individuals involved in the industry – regardless of how they got there - experience lasting emotional and psychological trauma.
RESOURCE: Creating Exit Ramps from Sex Trafficking into Safety and Healing
MAP’s priority is to reduce the number of people who experience this type of harm by identifying and eliminating the community-level conditions that create entry ramps into this industry, and changing community-level conditions to unblock or create exit ramps into safety and healing. “We Are All Connected: Creating Exit Ramps from Sex Trafficking into Safety and Healing” is an educational resource designed to shift how men (and others in the community) think and talk about the commercial sex industry, as well as how our communities should approach the prevention of sex trafficking and sexual exploitation.
